Gill Civil delivered urgent pavement reconstruction works across 19 high-risk areas of Manchester Airport’s Alpha Bravo Taxiway, completing the works within restricted night and weekend possessions while maintaining safe airfield operations.
Gill Civil carried out urgent repairs to multiple high-risk pavement sections on Manchester Airport’s Alpha Bravo Taxiway, addressing areas requiring immediate intervention to maintain airfield safety and operational compliance. The scope covered 19 individual treatment areas totalling approximately 560m², each averaging 25m², located within critical runway zones. Works included breakout and removal of defective pavement, installation of Wet Lean Concrete, sub-base, and PQC surfacing to reinstate the taxiway to project specification standards.
Delivering repairs within high-risk runway areas demanded careful planning and flexible working practices. All works were undertaken in airside environment during restricted night-time possession periods, requiring efficient sequencing to maximise output, while the site’s exposure to Low Visibility Procedure closures risked disrupting scheduled activities. To meet tight programme deadlines, weekend working was introduced alongside night shifts, with specialist plant and experienced crews deployed to complete breakout, preparation and concrete installation within each window, all coordinated closely with airfield operations teams.
The intervention immediately eliminated critical pavement defect risks, restoring full structural integrity and operational safety across vital airfield zones. Executing the repairs strictly within designated night and weekend possession windows prevented unplanned downtime, allowing scheduled flight movements to continue without disruption. The scheme demonstrated the team’s capacity to mobilise rapidly and deliver durable, aviation-grade concrete solutions under demanding operational constraints, extending the asset life of the taxiway while maintaining stringent airfield compliance.
