(MAN) Stand 16-17

Gill Civil delivered pavement rehabilitation and infrastructure upgrades across Taxiway JE-JF and five stands at Manchester Airport, supporting Code C operations while maintaining access throughout complex live-airside works.

Project Overview and Scope

As part of the AGL Realigning and Upgrade Programme at Manchester Airport, Gill Civil delivered pavement rehabilitation works to Taxiway JE-JF and Stands 1, 5, 16, 17, and 18, supporting upgrades to Code C. Works included realignment, fuel hydrant relocation, pavement reconstruction, and High Mast Light foundations. Delivered within a live airside environment, the scope included excavation, breakout, reinstatement, and on-site batching for compliant concrete. Works were phased to maintain access, with all concrete tested under UKAS procedures.

Challenges and Execution

Works were delivered within a live airside environment, with challenges including active fuel mains, proximity to terminal buildings, and winter conditions. Pavement over fuel mains required isolation before breakout, with initial sections lifted rather than broken out, adding complexity to sequencing and coordination with MASHCo. Additional constraints included working around High Mast Light foundations and accommodating FEGP and AVDG ducting while maintaining access for aircraft and vehicles. Careful phasing, planning, and use of an on-site batching plant ensured compliant concrete delivery and efficient placement.

Benefits and Outcomes

The project was delivered on programme, with all PQC and WLC sections meeting airfield performance requirements. On-site batching and phased delivery ensured consistent quality, while careful planning around fuel mains and critical infrastructure minimised disruption. All works were completed under UKAS testing, achieving the required structural integrity. The project demonstrates Gill Civil’s capability to deliver complex live-airside works while maintaining operations and compliance.
