PART OF THE GILL GROUP
Project Overview and Scope
Gill Civil delivered a major taxiway replacement at Gatwick Airport (Block 55), incorporating specialist bridging details and airfield lighting infrastructure. The works were designed to enhance the long-term durability and performance of the taxiway while maintaining protection of existing live services. The scope included installation of approximately 5,500m² of 150mm Wet Lean Concrete (C8/10), placement of 350mm and 500mm Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC), A393 mesh reinforcement in selected bays, installation of approximately 700m of secondary AGL ducting, and 200m of Gatic Ultraslot drainage.
Challenges and Execution
The primary challenge was the presence of multiple live services beneath the work area, with limited as-built information available. Bespoke bridging details were required to safely distribute loads and protect these services, with solutions developed and implemented progressively as they were exposed. A flexible “design-as-you-go” approach was adopted, supported by close coordination and careful sequencing to ensure safe delivery. All works were undertaken within a live airside environment, requiring strict safety compliance and minimal disruption to ongoing airport operations.
Benefits and Outcomes
Tailored bridging solutions ensured the protection of critical live services while maintaining full taxiway functionality throughout the works. The flexible delivery approach enabled efficient progress despite unknown
conditions, while the upgraded pavement structure improved long-term durability and performance. The scheme also reduced future maintenance risk through enhanced load distribution, robust construction, and improved drainage, delivering a resilient, high-quality airfield asset.
