(EMA) UPS APRON EXTENSION

Gill Civil was appointed by Galliford Try to construct a new 14,175m² apron for the UPS facility at East Midlands Airport. The works included installation of 150mm lean mix concrete and 325mm Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) across both airside and landside areas. The project was supported by an on-site MCM60 batching plant and a UKAS-accredited testing laboratory, ensuring consistent concrete production and quality assurance throughout the works. The scheme formed a key part of the airport’s logistics infrastructure, supporting cargo operations and long-term asset performance.

Delivered across four phases within a live airport environment, the project required six-day working to meet programme deadlines while maintaining ongoing operations. On-site batching enabled reliable and continuous supply of concrete to both airside and landside work areas, reducing logistical constraints and ensuring programme certainty. Careful planning, sequencing, and coordination with stakeholders ensured safety compliance, quality control, and efficient delivery throughout each phase.

The apron was completed safely and in line with programme requirements, delivering a durable, high-performance pavement solution capable of supporting intensive cargo operations. The successful delivery maintained uninterrupted airport functionality while enhancing long-term operational efficiency and resilience of the UPS facility.
