(MAN) TAXIWAY ALPHA ECHO

Gill Civil delivered taxiway rehabilitation at Manchester Airport, installing high-strength layered concrete within a live airside environment to enhance long-term pavement performance.

Project Overview and Scope

Gill Civil was appointed by Galliford Try to deliver rehabilitation works on Taxiway Alpha Echo at Manchester Airport, installing 7,700m² of 730mm thick FH dry lean concrete in layered construction, including two AGL duct crossings. The works formed a key part of maintaining and strengthening the airfield pavement structure to support ongoing aircraft operations.

Challenges and Execution

Works were undertaken within a live airside environment under strict safety and operational controls, requiring careful planning and coordination to maintain airport functionality. The depth and layered construction of the pavement required precise placement and compaction to achieve the required performance standards. All concrete was tested in accordance with DIO Specification 051, ensuring full compliance with airfield requirements and consistent quality throughout the works.

Benefits and Outcomes

Completed in April 2018, the scheme successfully restored the structural
integrity of the taxiway, delivering a durable and compliant pavement solution. The works were carried out safely and efficiently, maintaining operational continuity while enhancing the long-term performance and resilience of the airfield infrastructure.
