PART OF THE GILL GROUP
Project Overview and Scope
Gill Civil delivered airside infrastructure and pavement works on Taxiway Zulu at Manchester Airport for Lagan Airfield Maintenance (March–July 2024). The scope included pavement breakout and preparation, installation of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) and Wet Lean Concrete (WLC) layers, slot drainage and associated pipework, construction of access chambers, and full reinstatement. Works were supported by on-site batching and comprehensive concrete testing to ensure quality and compliance.
Challenges and Execution
Works were undertaken within a live airside environment under strict safety and access controls, requiring detailed planning and coordination with airport stakeholders. Precise logistics and sequencing were essential
to manage plant, materials, and personnel while meeting demanding loadbearing and durability requirements. The use of on-site batching, combined with experienced airside teams, ensured consistent concrete quality, efficient delivery, and programme certainty throughout the project.
Benefits and Outcomes
The project was delivered safely and on schedule, with Taxiway Zulu successfully returned to service in line with operational requirements. The completed works provide enhanced pavement strength, improved drainage performance, and long-term resilience, supporting safe and efficient aircraft operations at Manchester Airport.
