PART OF THE GILL GROUP
Project Overview and Scope
Gill Civil was appointed to deliver the reinforced external concrete yard slabs for the DHL Distribution Hub at Horton Road, Slough. The works comprised the installation of 22,500m² of 190mm thick C32/40 air-entrained concrete, reinforced with C385 mesh, alongside concrete testing, joint sealing with fuel-resistant sealant, and pours to Gatic slot drainage. The slab design incorporated longitudinal, expansion, contraction, and isolation joints, with dowelled connections to ensure effective load transfer and long-term structural performance.
Challenges and Execution
The project was delivered during the winter months, presenting challenging conditions for concrete placement and curing. The site was logistically complex, with multiple contractors operating within constrained working areas and evolving construction sequences. Gill Civil maintained close coordination with BGCL and the wider project team to ensure timely access to work areas and adherence to programme requirements. Collaboration with the concrete supplier and subcontractors ensured consistent quality and supply, while flexible working hours and adaptive planning allowed works to progress efficiently despite changing site conditions and technical requirements.
Benefits and Outcomes
The works were successfully completed in line with programme milestones, delivering a durable, high-performance concrete yard capable of supporting heavy-duty logistics operations. The robust jointing and drainage systems enhance long-term performance, while effective planning and coordination ensured high quality standards were maintained throughout in a challenging, multi-contractor environment.
