Gill Civil delivered pavement rehabilitation works on the A30 near Penzance, Cornwall, as part of National Highways’ lifecycle extension programme for the concrete trunk road network. The scheme involved full-depth replacement of deteriorated carriageway bays during night-time closures to minimise disruption. Works included saw cutting and coring, removal and disposal of existing bays, subbase repairs, and installation of new 220mm thick High Early Strength Concrete bays with dowelling and jointing. A total of 25 bays were completed, supported by UKAS accredited and out-of-hours concrete testing to confirm early strength gain and safe reopening to traffic.

Works were delivered within a live highway environment, requiring effective traffic management and night-time working to maintain safety and minimise disruption to road users. Tight programme constraints demanded efficient planning, sequencing, and coordination throughout the works. Additional challenges included integrating new concrete bays with the existing pavement structure and managing coastal exposure at Longrock, where moisture, salt, and weather conditions influenced durability considerations and concrete performance.

The A30 Longrock Bypass Life Extension Works successfully upgraded and strengthened the existing carriageway, extending pavement life and improving long-term performance under continued traffic loading. Delivered for M Group as part of a wider asset management programme, the scheme was completed within the planned timeframe in February 2024. Efficient traffic management and phased delivery ensured minimal disruption to road users while maintaining safety and programme certainty throughout the works.
