Birmingham Intermodal Freight Terminal (BIFT)

Gill Civil delivered reinforced concrete pavement reconstruction works within the operational bays at the Birmingham International Freight Terminal for Maritime Transport Ltd, on behalf of Buckingham Group Contracting. The scheme involved strengthening and upgrading the existing pavement to support ongoing heavy-duty freight and logistics operations within a live port environment. Works included breakout and removal of the existing pavement, installation of heavy reinforcement and dowel connections, and construction of new 390mm thick reinforced concrete slabs with a rough power-floated finish. To minimise disruption and maintain operations, the works were phased and delivered in two stages, ensuring continuous access across the terminal bays.

Works were delivered within a live operational freight facility, requiring careful planning and coordination to minimise disruption to terminal activities. Achieving effective integration with the existing slabs required precise dowel installation and surface preparation. The heavily reinforced 390mm slab design, incorporating four layers of A393 mesh alongside cut & bent reinforcement, created congestion during placement and compaction, requiring strict quality control and specialist drilling equipment. The works were successfully completed within the required timeframe.

The project successfully strengthened and upgraded the operational slab areas, improving load-bearing capacity and long-term performance within the freight terminal. Specialist equipment, including EZ Drill systems, concrete pumps, power floats, and compaction tools, enabled efficient delivery, high-quality finishing, and full compliance with project specifications.
