M5 Junction 27

Gill Civil delivered lifecycle extension works on the M5 near Junction 27 at Willand, covering both carriageways and slip roads as part of a wider pavement renewal programme. Works included approximately 4,000m² of full-depth 280mm concrete bay replacement, including removal of existing bays, sub-base preparation, dowelling and jointing, and installation of new High Early Strength Concrete. Due to programme constraints, 7 bays were additionally installed using rapid-strength concrete. Operating at outputs of 10 bays per shift, the scheme also included concrete testing, soft spot rectification, and weekend working to minimise disruption to road users.

Works were delivered within a live motorway environment, requiring strict traffic management and phased working to minimise disruption on the M5. Programme coordination was further challenged by evolving scope changes and additional bays being introduced during the works, requiring rapid adaptation and close collaboration with suppliers to maintain continuity. Winter conditions impacted concrete curing, while careful alignment and coordination with other contractors were required to integrate new bays with the existing pavement safely and efficiently.
