PART OF THE GILL GROUP
Project Overview and Scope
Gill Civil delivered major Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) and lean mix concrete works as part of the Manchester Airport Transformation Project. The scope included installation of 150,000m² of PQC (320–430mm), 151,000m² of lean mix (150–175mm), over 1,000lm of F900 Gatic slot drainage with associated chambers and silt boxes, and AGL secondary ducting. The works also involved full mobilisation of an on-site batching plant and UKAS-accredited testing laboratory across both airside and landside areas, supporting a significant upgrade to airfield infrastructure.
Challenges and Execution
Extensive concrete volumes and phased sectional handovers required continuous 24-hour operations within a live airside environment, demanding careful planning and strict safety compliance. On-site batching with heated water systems ensured consistent production during winter conditions, while articulated dump truck logistics enabled efficient movement of materials across the site. Controlled compaction methods and semi-mechanised laying techniques were implemented to maintain consistent quality and meet stringent airfield specifications throughout the programme.
Benefits and Outcomes
Strategic planning, in-house production capability, and experienced airport delivery teams enabled safe, on-time, and within-budget completion. The works significantly increased apron capacity and delivered durable, high-performance pavement and drainage infrastructure. The project was completed while maintaining uninterrupted airport operations, enhancing long-term resilience and supporting future growth of the airfield.
