PART OF THE GILL GROUP
Project Overview and Scope
Gill Civil was appointed to deliver Phase 1 of PP04 (Packages D6 and D5a) at Manchester Airport as part of the wider Transformation Programme. Works included installation of approximately 1,450m of AGL secondary ducting, 600lm of F900 Gatic Ultraslot drainage in various sizes with associated chambers, and construction of 15,500m² of 430mm Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) and 125mm Wet Lean Concrete (WLC). The scheme formed a key element of the ongoing airfield infrastructure upgrade, supporting increased capacity and long-term operational performance.
Challenges and Execution
Delivered within a live airside environment during night operations, the project required strict adherence to safety protocols and precise coordination with airport operations. Significant concrete volumes across concurrent packages demanded a reliable and continuous supply, leading to the establishment of an on-site batching plant and UKAS-accredited testing laboratory. Operating day and night, with heated water systems to support winter production, ensured consistent quality and programme certainty despite challenging conditions.
Benefits and Outcomes
Continuous on-site production, combined with experienced airside delivery teams, enabled safe and efficient execution within operational constraints. The works maintained full airport functionality throughout and delivered high-strength pavement and drainage infrastructure, supporting long-term durability, resilience, and performance of the airfield.
