Project Overview and Scope
Gill Civil delivered airfield pavement works at RAF Valley, installing 26,075m² of 260mm Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) and 150mm Wet Lean Concrete (WLC). The scope also included installation of Gatic slot drainage, V-channel drainage systems, and associated catch pits and outlet chambers. The works formed a key part of the airfield infrastructure upgrade, designed to enhance operational performance and long-term durability.
Challenges and Execution
The majority of works were undertaken during a four-week airfield shutdown (“bolthole”), requiring intensive day and night operations to meet strict programme deadlines. An on-site batching plant was mobilised to ensure continuous concrete supply, maintain quality control, and reduce reliance on external logistics. Careful planning, efficient sequencing, and close coordination enabled delivery within the constrained timeframe while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
Benefits and Outcomes
The scheme was successfully delivered within the restricted shutdown period, ensuring the airfield was returned to full operational use on programme. The completed works provide durable, high-performance pavement and drainage infrastructure, supporting long-term resilience and reliability of the airfield.
