Project Overview and Scope
Gill Civil was appointed to construct a new 4,500m² aircraft stand at Edinburgh Airport. The works included installation of 150mm Wet Lean Concrete (WLC) and 500mm Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC), along with new drainage systems, AGL ducting, strengthening of AGL pits, Gatic slot drains, and reinforcement cover slabs. The scheme formed part of the airport’s ongoing infrastructure improvements to support operational performance and aircraft movements.
Challenges and Execution
Delivered within a live airside environment under a tight winter programme, the works required coordinated day and night concrete placement to meet programme deadlines. An on-site batching plant was mobilised to control production and ensure consistent supply, while heated water systems and thermal blankets were used to maintain concrete quality during coldweather operations. Careful planning and sequencing, combined with strict safety controls, ensured efficient delivery within the constrained working conditions.
Benefits and Outcomes
The project was successfully completed on programme despite challenging winter conditions, delivering a high-strength, durable aircraft stand capable of supporting long-term operational demands. Gill Civil’s performance was recognised by BAM Nuttall and Edinburgh Airport, highlighting the team’s commitment to quality, safety, and reliable delivery within a live airport environment.
