Gill Civil reinstated defective concrete slabs at Birmingham Airport using rapid-strength concrete, enabling safe, on-programme delivery and quick return to service within a live airside environment.

Project Overview and Scope

Eleven sections of defective concrete slabs at Birmingham International Airport were reinstated within live Code C stands using high early-strength concrete (Peragrene) to enable rapid replacement and early return to service. Works included saw cutting and coring, breakout and reinstatement of 150mm and 360mm concrete bays with A393 mesh reinforcement, brushed finishes, sawn contraction and isolation joints, and UKAS concrete testing to ensure quality and compliance.

Challenges and Execution

Works were delivered during restricted night-time access within live airside environments, requiring strict safety compliance, FOD control, and close coordination with airport operations. High early-strength concrete (Peragrene) enabled rapid curing within tight possession windows, including during sub-zero conditions. Wide bay pours were completed using multiple concrete deliveries to maintain workability, while repeatable sequencing and specialist airside equipment ensured consistent quality and on-time handback across multiple locations.

Benefits and Outcomes

The project was delivered on programme within a live airside environment, using rapid-strength, high-performance concrete to minimise disruption to aircraft movements. Specialist planning, equipment, and cold-weather measures ensured safe delivery, long-term durability, and reduced operational risk.
