Newquay Airport G7

Supported by £7.8 million of Cabinet Office funding for the Cornwall G7 Summit, we delivered time-critical, aviation-standard civil engineering and pavement infrastructure upgrades at Newquay Airport on a turnkey basis. Working within a live airside environment, our scope included batching plant mobilisation and trials, UKAS-compliant testing for groundworks and concrete works, installation of subsurface and surface Gatic drainage systems including manhole installations, breakout and excavation works, Type 1 reinstatement, and pavement construction across the Golf Spectacles, Golf Fillet and Echo Delta Grass Infill areas, alongside the successful installation of Wet Lean Concrete (WLC) and Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC).

The project presented significant logistical and programme constraints, driven by an immovable G7 delivery deadline. To maintain progress, the team implemented a dual-shift working pattern, operating days and nights on a seven-day basis, enabling a near-continuous 24/7 delivery programme throughout the works. Concurrently, the project was impacted by severe material supply disruptions during the COVID-19 lockdown period, particularly in relation to cement availability within the UK. This necessitated alternative procurement strategies across Europe to secure critical materials and safeguard programme continuity. Throughout delivery, strict health, safety, and social distancing measures were implemented and maintained across the live airfield environment.

The successful delivery of high-performance pavement infrastructure ensured Newquay Airport was fully prepared for the G7 Summit while also delivering long-term operational and structural enhancements. Delivered with minimal disruption to live airfield operations and in full compliance with regulatory requirements, the project demonstrated our capability to execute complex, time-critical infrastructure within highly regulated aviation environments. It further reinforced our ability to maintain programme certainty and delivery performance under challenging conditions, including strict COVID-19 working restrictions and significant international supply chain disruptions.
