Leeds Bradford Airport

As part of a wider programme to increase stand capacity at Leeds Bradford Airport, Gill Civil was appointed to construct two new remote aircraft stands, including taxiway tie-ins and associated infrastructure. The scope included mobilisation of an on-site batching plant and UKAS-approved laboratory, installation of lean mix and Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC), AGL ducting, and F900 slot drainage with chambers. Works were delivered in phased day and night operations to maintain airport functionality, supported by pre-construction trials to validate a bespoke concrete specification.

The project was undertaken within a live airfield environment, requiring strict adherence to operational and safety constraints, including effective Foreign Object Debris (FOD) management. Maintaining airport operations necessitated carefully planned phasing and coordination across both daytime and nighttime working windows. Additional complexity arose from the bespoke concrete specification, which required detailed trials and stringent quality control to ensure compliance with performance requirements. Weather conditions posed further challenges, particularly for concrete placement, curing, and finishing. The coordination of multiple work streams – including pavement construction, drainage, and AGL ducting – required precise sequencing to avoid clashes and maintain programme efficiency.

The works delivered significant value by increasing stand capacity and improving operational flexibility at Leeds Bradford Airport. Through careful phasing, on-site production, and rigorous testing, the project achieved a high-quality, durable airfield asset while maintaining uninterrupted airport operations. The solution demonstrated efficiency, reliability, and full compliance with the bespoke specification.
