PART OF THE GILL GROUP
Project Overview & Scope
Gill Civil delivered 16,000m² of pavement quality concrete (PQC) and installed 375m of slot drainage for the new Park & Ride facility at M5 Junction 23, supporting the Hinkley Point Power Plant. The scheme formed a key element of the wider infrastructure required to facilitate transport and access to the site. Works included placement of reinforcement mesh, construction of a 200mm concrete slab, installation of slot drainage systems, and construction of 10 access chambers, all designed to provide a durable, high-performance pavement suitable for long-term operational use.
Challenges and Execution
Working in collaboration with Costain, Gill Civil implemented an on-site batching operation using volumetric trucks through its in-house supplier, Britannia Onsite Concrete. This approach ensured a consistent and reliable concrete supply, reducing dependency on external logistics and maintaining programme certainty. Careful planning and coordination were required to manage large concrete volumes, sequencing of works, and integration of drainage and structural elements. The use of on-site production enabled flexibility in delivery, ensuring quality control was maintained throughout the construction process.
Benefits and Outcomes
The project was completed within the required timeframe, demonstrating efficient delivery and strong collaboration across the project team. The completed works provide a robust, durable pavement and drainage solution capable of supporting long-term operational demands. The successful implementation of on-site batching and controlled construction methods ensured high-quality outcomes, improved programme reliability, and contributed to the overall success of this critical infrastructure scheme.
