Runcorn & Widnes

Gill Civil delivered infrastructure and public realm works as part of the Dukesfield Active Transport Link scheme in Halton, improving pedestrian and cycling connectivity around Runcorn Railway Station. The project formed part of a wider regeneration and sustainable transport programme linking residential areas, transport hubs, and local amenities. Works included site clearance, removal of existing highway infrastructure, installation of drainage systems, attenuation tanks, precast chambers, earthworks, kerbing, surfacing, landscaping, vacuum excavation, traffic management, and pedestrian segregation measures within a live public environment.

Works were undertaken within a constrained urban environment containing live underground services, requiring detailed planning, utility mapping, and careful coordination to mitigate excavation risks. Maintaining safe access for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles remained a key priority, with phased traffic management and segregation systems implemented to minimise disruption while maintaining programme efficiency.

The completed scheme delivered a high-quality active travel route, improving connectivity between residential areas, Runcorn Railway Station, and the town centre. The project supports wider regeneration objectives by encouraging sustainable transport, reducing congestion, and improving air quality. Through specialist construction techniques and coordinated delivery, Gill Civil completed the works safely and efficiently with minimal disruption to the surrounding community.
