PART OF THE GILL GROUP
Project Overview and Scope
Gill Civil was appointed by Galliford Try to deliver the reconfiguration of the Central Apron. The works included breakout and reinstatement of existing Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) and wet lean concrete, relocation of four High Mast Lighting (HML) bases, installation of AGL ducting and pits, and the supply and placement of PQC supported by UKAS-accredited testing. The scheme formed part of a wider upgrade to improve apron functionality and support ongoing airfield operations.
Challenges and Execution
Delivered across four phases within a live airside environment, the project required careful sequencing and coordination to maintain safe airport operations. Existing pavement, sub-base, and HML bases were removed and reconstructed in a controlled manner, with close attention to maintaining service continuity. Concrete was supplied via on-site volumetric mixers, ensuring consistent quality, flexibility in delivery, and programme certainty. Close coordination with stakeholders enabled efficient progress within the constrained working environment.
Benefits and Outcomes
The apron was successfully reconfigured without disruption to airport operations, enhancing pavement strength and improving airfield lighting infrastructure. The completed works provide a durable, compliant surface designed to support long-term performance, demonstrating Gill Civil’s ability to deliver complex airside projects safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
