PART OF THE GILL GROUP
Project Overview & Scope
Gill Civil delivered essential pavement maintenance works on the A55 between Junction 34 and Junction 35 on behalf of the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent (NMWTRA). The project involved full-depth replacement of damaged concrete pavement bays and crack repairs through stitch drilling to restore structural integrity and extend the service life of the carriageway. All works were delivered within a single weekend possession to minimise disruption to road users.
Challenges and Execution
The scheme required careful planning and coordination to complete 31 bay replacements and associated crack stitching within a restricted possession window from Friday evening to Monday morning. Works included removal of existing pavement sections, base preparation, installation of dowels and stitch drilling bars, followed by placement of C50/60 structural concrete and PQX rapid-strength concrete. The use of high-performance mixes allowed early strength gain, ensuring the pavement could safely reopen within the limited timeframe despite changing weather conditions, evolving site scope, and complex traffic management requirements across multiple lanes.
Benefits and Outcomes
Through efficient sequencing, strong site coordination, and the use of rapid-strength concrete technology, the project was delivered safely, ahead of schedule and within budget. The carriageway was successfully handed back to traffic on Sunday evening, significantly earlier than the planned Monday reopening, reducing disruption to road users and restoring longterm pavement performance along this section of the A55.
