PART OF THE GILL GROUP
Project Overview and Scope
Gill Civil was appointed by John Sisk to construct a new 12,500m² aircraft apron for the Boeing maintenance facility at Gatwick Airport. The works included installation of 150mm lean mix concrete and dowelled Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) with depths ranging from 225mm to 500mm. An on-site UKAS-accredited concrete testing facility was established to ensure consistent quality and compliance throughout the project. The scheme formed a key part of the wider development of the Boeing maintenance infrastructure.
Challenges and Execution
Delivered within a landside airport environment, the project required careful interface management with adjacent contractors, including follow-on works associated with the Boeing Hangar Enabling scheme. Detailed planning, close coordination, and effective sequencing were essential to maintain programme alignment and ensure consistent quality. The team worked collaboratively with stakeholders to manage access, logistics, and evolving site conditions while maintaining high safety and performance standards.
Benefits and Outcomes
The apron was completed four weeks ahead of schedule, demonstrating efficient delivery and strong programme control. The finished pavement provides a high-strength, durable surface capable of supporting long-term aircraft maintenance operations, contributing to the overall performance and resilience of the facility.
